Jan 4 - What is an Athame? & Blade Blessing Ritual

An Athame, usually pronounced (a-THAW-may), is a ceremonial or magical dagger. Athames are not used for physical cutting and therefore are typically blunt. Athames are also representative of the element of fire. Some traditions specify that the athame must have a black handle, as black is a color that absorbs energy.

*Please remember to do your own research in addition to watching my videos and reading my website articles, there is always much more to learn! Remember that not all practitioners will use the same rituals, this should just be used as a possible example. Experienced witches are encouraged to add to or create their own spells!

Blade Blessing Ritual:

1- Start by sprinkling salt on or placing the blade in a bowl of plain salt to purify it. Light a white candle beside the salted blade.

2- Lift the knife and hold it in both hands. Say aloud:

Blade of metal so strong,

You will serve me well and long.

Spells we craft; together we belong.

Blessings and magic bind this song.

So mote it be. And so it is.

3- Pass the metal of the blade through the flame while repeating the spell. Keep the Athame at your altar, usually placed on the right side.
